About
Global Urban Ministries Network (GUMNet) is an international peer-to-peer network, learning team, and community of urban ministry practitioners committed to understanding, nurturing, and interrelating vital Christianity in their own cities and the cities of the world.
Vision
A systemic urban ministry approach engaging existing local & regional networks within and between multiple, urban centers of the world.
The ongoing development of a collaborative ministry of diverse cities and citywide urban church systems sharing their collective understanding of God’s design and activity within their common local, regional, and global community contexts.
Focus Engaging multiple cities through locally developed, multi-network, citywide learning teams that compile, process, and share foundational information and understanding regarding:
- An overview of the church in their city
- Existing urban ministry training systems in their city
Beyond their local application and value, these city reports provide an initial focus and basis for regional and international connections, conversation, and learning with regard to God’s activity within and between multiple urban centers and citywide church systems.
Boston: A Sample City Report (3MB)
The Boston Report provides a brief introduction with links to more in-depth information regarding: an overview of the church in the heart of Metro Boston and existing urban ministry training systems. This sample report happens to be from a city that already has many years of research. Reports from other cities will vary.
GUMNet’s History & Development
After a series of teleconference meetings in 2006, GUMNet formed when a group of 12 people from different countries convened in June of 2007 in Boston to discern how believers could better serve God in addressing the challenges of cities around the globe. Compelled by the vision of the church in John 17:20-23, GUMNet began to connect cities around the world in order for the body of Christ to work together in unity.
GUMNet’s second international gathering in Sept of 2009 in New York City focused on developing its long term vision, mission, and outcomes around various topics including: connecting existing regional network leaders, sharing and developing urban ministry education and training resources, developing an international urban ministry practitioner news network, and considering future international consultations in Mumbai and Cape Town in 2010.
GUMNet currently engages urban ministry practitioners in over 20 countries.
